The Find

Finding childhood artefacts is a bit of a trend at Geoffrey Bunting Graphic Design. This particular item was a tatty book on cowboys, one of those with enormous writing and copies of watercolour images. In the middle, in a chapter about cattle-wrangling, was a large grid of different brands and their meanings. Given our specialism in branding, it seemed a waste not to digitise them.


The Context

What on the surface seems a straightforward, laconic practice, cattle branding is in fact a playground of design and cowboy semiotics. Symbols, visual puns and jaunty combinations of letters, numbers and, styles make up a tradition of brand design that continues until today.
